Strength Training

Posted by Steven D.

Does anyone have any "at-home" exercises in addition to pushups and pullups that help to build muscle in the chest area? Or are there any variations of pushups that seem to help more than others?

You can use an exercise ball to support you while doing flys and of course there are rows as well. As far as pushups are concerned just vary your hand placement to work the muscles from different angles.

There are virtually hundreds of variations of push-ups.

Starting with a basic push-up, you can create new versions by modifying:

Arm position - close to the body, out wide, towards the head, closer to the waist

Hand position - palms flat, on knuckles, on fingertips, fingers in, fingers out

Leg position - legs wide apart, legs together, legs elevated on chair, stability ball, 1 leg raised

Depth of push-up - All the way down to the floor v.s partial reps

Tempo - how fast or slow you complete the rep - this is a powerful too - my fave - slow going down to the floor and explode quickly back up

Other variations - dive bomb or hindu push-ups

Added weight - Place weights in a back pack or add a weight vest or use stretch tubing across your back or chains

I hope these suggestions are helpful

Hey Steven if you have the equipment you can do anything from this list.

But there are also exercise to do without equipment.

Yeah your best bet is like what Doug R is talking about, doing mixed variations. To grow more chest muscle you need to increase your level of resistance right, so you need to either start putting weight on your back as you do pushup`s or start changing the angle of push ups.

The higher your feet are in the air the more resistance you will cause, its going to get a lot more dificult but you will definatley see better results by doing so.

You can also try resistant arm bands or doing lots of reps with small weights. That's what I've been doing. I was initially discouraged by lifting heavier weights and found that it’s much more rewarding and easier doing lighter weights. I found an amazing article at PeopleJam that might help you on your road to strength training. Good luck! :)
