Incorporating strength training into your workout program will help build muscle and bone, both good things, especially as we grow older, but many women think that lifting weights will give them arms like Popeye. Wrong! Sure if you train every day with weights that are too heavy you might put on unwanted muscle, but light to moderate weight training on machines or with free weights will help you look more toned and slimmer. And you only need to do it for about 20 minutes three times a week; it's best to alternate days. Many gyms incorporate strength training into their fitness classes; look for the words "body conditioning" or "body sculpting," or ask a trainer or fitness expert to show you how to use the weight machines. Don't lift weights until you ache. Start with small weights that you can lift 12 times, and work up to two sets. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to fit in strength training. And an added bonus: you'll burn calories more efficiently after you weight train.
Hmm... I'm going to have to give this a try. Thank you for the tips! Alternating days sounds like a good idea too... I used to weight lift everyday, and that's definitely when the unwanted muscle got packed in.
