Hello everyone! If you haven’t received the memo by now, then please allow me to break it down: I am here to help! It is definitely my calling. So, this is the first installment in a three part series to do that very thing. We are going talk about the different stages we undergo on our fitness journey. This doesn’t just apply to people who train, but people who train people who train. Huh? It’s for everyone. Here’s the best part; you get the opportunity to be a part of my blog! So here comes a little payback to show the respect, appreciation and desire to enrich your lives that I have felt for so long. Away we go!
Why do we begin training? At some point in our lives, we all feel as though we need to make some sort of change. It takes many different shapes, but when it takes the shape of getting in shape, it is something, very special. You may think that it couldn’t be that extraordinary, but fitness affects us on so many different levels. I love to see how people change through exercise and adherence to a healthier lifestyle. It sharpens the mind, balances the emotions and turns our bodies into a well-oiled machine.
Maybe someone has never worked out in their life, but one day, they realize that walking up the stairs or to the mailbox has become more of a chore. Uh-oh! What has happened? Maybe someone else was an athlete in high school or college, and one day, they are looking in the mirror, only to find that the washboard stomach they once had, has mysteriously disappeared. Ah! What has happened? More importantly, what do you do about it? It’s time to train with The Tiger, people!
When someone comes into the club, or begins training with me for the first time, one truth is very evident. It doesn’t matter what you say; you’re here for one reason. It, more often than not, has very little to do with exercise. It’s my job to find out what you need and help you discover it for yourself. Fitness is just the medium we use for transcending the surface, and given the proper amount of time and dedication, we will get to the bottom of things. It’s not about me, it’s about helping people down their path, and the path, is why you are here.
When working with people for the first time in a one-on-one basis, we generally do an assessment. From that point, we talk about goals and then begin the workout. Now, every trainer has a different approach, but what I like to do as far as exercise, is teach the basics. There are four major muscle groups–legs, back, chest and abdominals. My job is to instruct, correct and help refine exercises for those groups (and sometimes the minor ones i.e. shoulders,triceps and biceps), as well as, encourage along the way. At this point, we are already learning about each other and ourselves. Wow! I’ll bet you never thought that, did you?
Here’s an example: TRX–Squats with W’s, Smith Machine–Push-ups, Australian Pull-ups, B.O.S.U.–Crunches, Medicine Ball–Squat and Press, TRX–Push-ups, Lat Pull-down, Leg Raises.
This is just a basic example of what I might have someone do for the first time. It, of course, depends on the person and what they need. These things are the building blocks for the structure you need to functionally correct and strengthen your posture and form. Try these things and incorporate them into your workouts. They are rudimentary but challenging. They are good for beginners as well as the savvy, workout connoisseur.
