Posted by Mary Ann P.

It's been said that women should do weight bearing exercises to benefit their bones. So how about you. Do you lift weights?

I don't lift weights, but I still do conditioning workouts for gymnastics.  It's a lot harder than you would think at first.  My workouts have to be fast-paced though; repitition isn't my thing. =]
I definitely think that it's important for women to strength train. I alternate my routine every couple of months so I won't plateau, plus it keeps my muscles always guessing. I highly recommend a women's fitness magazine called "Oxygen". It's especially designed for women and they have great tutorials for strength training and overall health. Their routines are for basic and advanced folks. The routines include step by step instructions and pictures to show proper form, not only that they explain what muscles benefit from that particular exercise. Oxygen has great recipe recommendations that I have actually tried, they are great. I don't normally plug magazines, but Oxygen deserves it. They help motivate me to get up every morning, I actually enjoy the exercises they have in their magazines.
I think weight training is very important, especially as we get older. If you want to be strong when you are older, having a regular strength training routine will make a huge difference!
Another Yoga Person Here. Count me in with Lela that I used to do more strength training and now that I am doing more yoga I don't feel the need to do as much with weights. However, I noticed lately that my weak wrists are holding me back with some yoga poses so I am planning on starting a short, ongoing weight regimen specifically for my wrists.
Yes and No. I used to do traditional strength training, until I found out that I get the same bone density benefits from yoga. Plus I like the lean look from yoga better than the lean look from weight training. I may pick up my weights again soon though - it's nice to mix things up.
