Basic Workout Equipment for Home Workouts

Posted Jun 23 2010 5:52am

If you have decided that you want to start working out at home, you are going to need the proper equipment, depending on the type of workouts you are planning on doing. For example, if you are planning on doing yoga, you will only need to have a yoga mat (and maybe a DVD player, if you use a yoga video to work out with) and some comfortable clothing to work out in. But for other types of workouts, you will be required to invest a little bit more money, so it is important to know exactly what you need and to shop around for the best prices.

Weight Training

Many people do their weight training in the home, because it is so convenient. And with so many weight machines available on the market today, it is becoming more and more convenient all the time to work out at home. But what kind of weight equipment will be best for the type of workout you want to do? It’s always wise to have free weights for your workout, such as dumbbells (five to ten pounds each are often best for a typical workout, unless of course body building is your thing, then you will use much heavier weights). A barbell with removable weights is also good to have. Really, if you just want to do simple workouts, these are all you need. But you can also get a universal weight machine, so you can get a total body workout. These can be a little bit on the expensive side, but with some smart shopping (you can often find these second-hand for a great price), you will be working out on one in no time at all. I myself have a full body workout multipurpose bench that allows me to do all the exercises that we usually do in the gym. Yes, including legs, chest, triceps, biceps with almost all the machine functions we get in a gym. Below is the picture just to let you know what it looks like and in case you may be interested to by it. You can click on the picture and you will be taken to Amazon, where you can inquire more about the current price of this bench and features. They keep on updating all the time.

Treadmills and Stationary Bikes

These days, you can get treadmills and stationary bikes that will actually fold up for easy storage, making them much more convenient than the older models. And newer machines like these aren’t nearly as noisy as the older ones either, making them much better for home use. Both machines provide great workouts and you can workout to music, or watch television as you exercise. In the case of stationary bikes, you can even read a book while you workout. Today’s machines are all digital and they will monitor your heart rate as you work out.

Working out at home is often much more convenient than going to a gym or health club and even after you figure in the cost of your workout equipment, is still less expensive in the long run. After all, you don’t have to pay monthly or annual fees to work out at home.
