Health knowledge made personal
Greetings! Stephanie here, a Chicago resident and I am proud to say...a patient with a HISTORY of Ulcerative Colitis. After being diagnosed on my 18th birthday with UC, I endured a four year long struggle with an unfamiliar enemy. I didn't realize how much this disease would dictate the course of my life, not only socially, but academically and economically. It affected not only me, but my entire family, my friends, and of course my job. I grew weary of medications and hospitals visits with only short term results. I finally went through serious bowel surgery on Aug 22nd, 2008 to have my diseased colon removed. Eight months later, I am living with an ileostomy and feeling better than I have in years! My blog chronicles my journey through surgery and the learning process that comes with life with an ileostomy and maybe one day, its reversal and life with a j-pouch.
I aspire to inform and assist those who are contending with the disease or are thinking about making the decision to have surgery. If I could help one person in the world, I would be happy. I know what it is like to feel alone in a fight, but please know that you are NEVER by yourself. There are plenty of patients, caregivers, friends, co-workers, and family who can relate. Never give up hope and keep fighting the good fight!
Best of Health to all!
