Make it a Habit

Posted by Lela D.

The trick is to make working out after work a habit. Once you start doing anything you gain some momentum and then you're sort of on auto-pilot. Once you get started, you'll feel so good and make new friends in your activity that it will become fun. Some people say you need to do something for 30 days to turn it into a habit. I don't know if that's true or not, but I do know that in the beginning, sometimes we have to trick ourselves, or otherwise provide incentive to try new things!

There are those days when you just don't want to go to the gym. My friends say that sometimes that's the best time to go, and I've seen that they're right (with the exception, of course, if you are ill, in pain, or your body is aching and needs to repair itself). If you're just not in the mood, get up and go. Lela's right-you won't regreat it when you're there. And think of how great you'll feel afterward.
A workout buddy (your dog counts too) can guilt you into going. If you have any consciousness, you don't want to let your friend down, so you end up going. This happened to me last night - I worked until 8:30 PM and still had no dinner, but my rock climbing buddy called me and said he was on his way. I had to go, but once I was there, I was glad! Thanks Grayson!
