Having met earlier this year in the league – an occasion on which the Ulster team came out on top by five points – the two teams fortunes have somewhat diverged in the intervening time. Both teams reached the semi-finals of the league and the final of their respective provincial competitions, but while on both occasions Mayo achieved morale boosting wins Down were on the receiving end of thumping defeats.

Having only had two games in the Championship thus far, there is a suggestion that Mayo haven’t quite performed to the standards hoped for as of yet. A facile win over Leitrim in the Connacht semi-final was followed up by an underwhelming if gutsy win over Sligo in a decider noted as much for a lack of quality forward play as anything else. The squad’s preparations weren’t helped by the withdrawal of services of Conor Mortimer in the week leading up to the game, and the Mayo men will be anxious to get back into action to firmly consign that controversy to the history books.

Down come into this one fresh from dispelling the notion that a six day turnaround from a defeat in a Provincial final is impossible to overcome. A decent win over a Tipperary team that came into their Round 4 Qualifier with a fair degree of momentum will have gone some way towards banishing the cobwebs leftover from a heavy defeat in the Ulster final and the talk coming from the Down camp has positively noted the oddity that in spite being well beaten by Donegal just two weeks ago they now find themselves at the same stage of the competition as their vanquishers.

For two sets of forwards that struggled last time out against well organised and defensive-minded outfits this clash should come as something of a relief. Obviously no team left at this stage of the Championship is without some system for stopping the opposition attackers, but neither of these teams play a hugely defensive style of football so we should be hopeful of seeing some decent performances from the likes of Andy Moran, Alan Dillon, Benny Coulter and Mark Poland.
