It was one of those frustrating games that teams have from time to time but that doesn't make it any easier to stomach. The New York Islanders, in the midst of a losing streak, came out and played about as well as you could ask against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. John Tavares scored his sixth goal of the sesaon and Colin McDonald added his first, but the Islanders still lost in regulation by a final score of 3-2 despite outplaying the Sabres. New York outshot Buffalo 43-15 for the game, including 15-4 in the first period, 14-7 in the second period, and 14-4 in the third period. Evgeni Nabokov would like to have this one back as he takes the loss after allowing three goals on just 15 shots. The Islanders had chances all night long but just couldn't find a way to put the puck past Ryan Miller. Tavares had an opportunity to tie the game on a penalty shot but the puck hit the post after beating Miller.

It was just that kind of night for the Islanders who have now lost four straight games after their quick start to the season and they'll need to be ready to play a Hurricanes club that's always dangerous. The Hurricanes come into this game off of a 4-3 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturay. Jiri Tlusty scored his first goal of the season just 17 seconds into the game but from that point on the Hurricanes were forced to battle back from behind twice. Jeff Skinner's sixth goal of the year tied things up in the second period but the Canes would fall behind again. Joe Corvo tied it for the last time in the third but Carolina eventually fell in the extra session. The loss puts Carolina at 5-4-1 on the season. Cam Ward made 28 saves in defeat.
