The St. Louis Blues will hope lightning strikes twice on Friday night as they head to Calgary to take on the Flames just two days removed from upsetting the Red Wings in overtime behind Jake Allen’s first victory of the season between the pipes. While it was a bit of a shaky performance for St.
Louis as a whole their young netminder recorded the victory as Alex Steen scored in overtime to give St. Louis the extra point and they’ll be looking for the same result when they play the Flames at the Saddledome. The Blues have been disappointed by Brian Elliott’s play so far this season and until Jaroslav Halak returns they might be using Allen more and more and it looks as though he’ll get the start against the Flames here tonight.
Calgary is going through a bit of a disappointing season as they sit at .500 on the year but they are coming off a victory in their latest game over the Dallas Stars which they hope will act as a catalyst for success moving forward. Flames captain Jarome Iginla has been publicly criticized over the last week for his efforts this season and while he did respond by cracking the scoresheet Iginla still has a ways to go this season before he can totally restore his image in Calgary.
Calgary is experiencing their own goaltending woes as Miika Kiprusoff remains sidelined but Leland Irving has been decent in a relief effort and he should get the call again here for Calgary. While this game is a battle of backups I think the difference will be in the depth up front and to me the Blues are far and away the better club and I don’t see the Flames home ice being much of an advantage tonight.
