is seroquel safe to take regularly for insomnia?

Posted by moonchild

i haven't been perscribed seroquel but my mother has and one of its off label uses is for insomnia which i've suffered with for many years, so last night i took a quarter of a tablet and had a lovley sleep, but seeing as it's officially an antipyschotic pill i'm wondering how safe it is to take regularly to help me sleep. i've been researching it for a couple of hours but all the info on it is quite contradictory so i'm very confused

No. Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication. It was prescribed by a doctor for a reason to treat a specific condition.

Under no circumstances should you or anyone else take medication meant for some else to self medicate an unrelated problem. Doing so may cause other problems such as adverse drug interactions or allergic reactions.

You can talk to your doctor or to a pharmacist for sleep specific medications. Better still, practice self-distraction techniques to quiet your mind so you can get to sleep. See: http://www.sleepjunkie.com/distraction-sleep.
