Why do I have sore, bright red bumps on wrist.

I had surgery on my right thumb on May the 27th.  I was in a cast until last Friday July 17.  They switched me to a brace.  Now I can't wear the brace because I have red, very sore bumps on my wrist , they started.  What is wrong, and why do they hurt so much?
