Why do I get tiny, random, perfectly round bruises on my legs?

Posted by Momma Risko

Lately, I have had small, almost perfectly round bruises appear randomly on my knees and calves.  They're only about 4 or 5 millimeters in diameter.  My mother said it was from lack of protein, (I'm vegan) but I'm sure that I get enough protein in my diet.

If it helps any, I do gymnastics and work out 3-6 times a day.  Could it be muscles overworking?

Hi,

You sound like a very dedicated gymnast!

There are a lot of reasons why you could be getting bruises. Gym equipment could be wearing out and not have enough padding in some spots.

You could be overworking your muscles. Our muscles do need time for recovery and repair. Have you increased your work outs recently?

It could be your diet. There are many successful vegan athletes. These sports stars pay very careful attention to getting enough of the right kinds of food to support their bodies.

Here's a great article by Brendan Brazier who is a vegan triathlete about getting the right foods. http://vegkitchen.com/tips/vegan-athlete.htm

This would be a good time to talk to your doctor to rule out more serious problems.

Do you keep a personal journal?  It would be a great idea to keep track of what you eat and drink, what supplements you take,  when you work out, and notes about new bruises to help the doctors get a better idea of what might be wrong.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

I'll defininitely check it out =]
