what can cause persistent dryness, itching, redness on my palms?

I've had this condition for years. My dermatologist thinks it is just irritated dry skin and has given me a prescription for eletone cream. It made my palms clear up for a little while but it never went away and is now more prevalent than ever. Could there be another cause?
