Things That Affect Your Self-Esteem

There are many things that affect our self-esteem. It could be the extra weight on our bodies, people who label or judge us, or certain things on our bodies that are unwanted or we think are unnecessary such as facial hair, back hair, or hairs that make us wonder...WTF?

For example, have you ever wondered what the purpose of underarm hair is? Well, I have, and I can't come up with an answer. All it does is annoy the heck out of me and I’m just embarrassed to raise my arms because I have coarse hairs that still show no matter how close I shave to the skin. For many years now I’ve been self-conscious about my armpits. I’ve tried waxing, but that’s just messy. I’ve even gone so far as to pluck the hairs so they don’t grow back as fast, but that takes forever. It’s getting to the point now that I want to go see a San Diego laser hair removal specialist to help me remove these unwanted hairs for good.

Another big thing that affects self-esteem is acne. I suffered from acne all throughout middle school and high school. I got it on my face, but I also got it on my back too. I didn't feel very pretty and I always wore a t-shirt over my swimsuit so people wouldn't see all the acne on my back. I don’t know if it’s a cultural thing because of the types of food we eat, but I do notice that many Filipinos get acne. Here in San Diego I see that Latinos also have this issue.

I was very obsessed with getting rid of my pimples, but my mom always nagged me about not touching or popping them because they would leave scars. Fortunately, nowadays, you can get an acne scar treatment such as laser treatment. After a few sessions, the scars could be gone permanently.

Whatever issues you have with your body - even the seemingly big things that affect your self-esteem - can be fixed. Stay focused on your inner beauty. Smile, laugh, and just remember that these issues don’t have to be permanent and that you have many options available.
