Review :: Earth Friendly Products ECOS Liquid Laundry Detergent

Posted May 05 2010 10:18am

Some of you may associated the smell of clean with high foaming, heavily perfumed colored liquid (or powder) because maybe that's what you grew up and when you smell the fumes wafting through the house or neighborhood you may associated it with a humming washing machine, tumbling dryer, stacks of clean clothes, sun shining through the windows and birds chirping like the commercials.  I, on the other hand, can't walk down the laundry detergent aisle at the grocery store without a). holding my breath or b). feeling dizzy and sick to my stomach; which is why I typically speed walk past the aisle and make my way to the natural section of the store where I'm most comfortable and can breathe.  About a month ago, I picked up a laundry detergent brand at Kroger I hadn't tried before and have been using it since.

You may be thinking to yourself "so you have a sensitivity, exactly what does that have to do with me?".  Well here's the thing - when you have a sensitivity to something it often opens your eyes and gives you a new understanding of the term "body burden" and quickly come to understand that said burden might not have to do with only you; it may very likely be true that other people are affected by it but they may not feel or know the effects of the burden immediately.  But it may be realized over time.  Another thing I've experienced personally, as well as heard from others, is that the less exposure to artificial fragrances, colors and toxic chemicals, the more I become intolerant to them.  Once our body knows what its like without them, it starts to reject them if reintroduced.  (Same thing happens when you stop eating refined sugar btw).  In the case of laundry detergent/soap, "environmental burden" is an undeniable factor for all of us, so whether or not you have a chemical sensitivity to conventional laundry detergents - it would greatly reduce pollution of water, soil and air if more of us switched to an environmentally friendly and biodegradable laundry detergent.

I've tried many eco-friendly versions, but some don't really clean, get the stains and stink out and others don't make clothes feel soft.  I've been using Earth Friendly Products ECOS Lavender Liquid Laundry Detergent for the past few weeks and I really like it!  The scent is very mild (organic lavender essential oil) and it works great to get grit, grime and odors out of our clothes.  I've noticed a real difference with this compared to many others I've tried.  I use it in my front loading, energy efficient washing machine using mostly cold water for all our loads.  They have a Lemongrass scent which I haven't tried but plan to when I run out of the Lavender I'm using now.  It also comes in a Fragrance-Free version if you are sensitive to even natural aromas.

What's your favorite laundry soap/detergent?  Which ones have you tried that didn't work out to well?
