More Oscars weekend coverage: Independent Spirit Awards with Aveeno and Recycle Bank, plus more!

Posted Mar 04 2011 7:46pm

I’m finally getting around to recapping the rest of my Oscars weekend. Have a big post coming soon on learning to say no to things…but that’s for another day.

The truly spectacular beach view from our room at Shutters on the Beach

Sooo, I spent part of Oscars weekend holed up at Shutters on the Beach–a super fancy, cute hotel right on the sand and surf in Santa Monica–courtesy of Aveeno and Recycle Bank. They asked me to be one of their insiders for a new program they’re launching, so over the course of the year, I’ll be giving you sneak peeks at new Aveeno products through the program. When I agreed to take part, they extended me an invitation to the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon: score!

On the red carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards--and yes, that IS a Jameson in my hand! Glasses are Tom Ford, trench coat is H&M, purse is Matt & Nat, and Catherine Deneuve-inspired-hair stayed in place thanks to LiQWD Professional Design Spray

If you’re not familiar with the Independent Spirit Awards, here’s the low-down: they’re every year on the afternoon before the Academy Awards. They’re much more low-key than the Oscars, taking place in a tent on the beach, but still stuffed to the rafters with A-listers.

Cindy Bokma and I went to the press tent to catch James Franco as he spoke with the journalists following his win!

Along with some of my blogger friends like Lianne Farbes , Elizabeth Dehn (who I now have a total friend crush on), Cindy Bokma , Erika Valente , Felicia Walker Benson , Romy Schorr , and Aly Walansky , I walked the red carpet and saw celebrities like James Franco, Uma Thurman, Aaron Eckhart, Taye Diggs, Liev Schriber, Anne Heche, Zoe Saldana and Kate Walsh up close and personal. (Other bloggers saw Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, Joel McHale and Mark Ruffalo, but I missed them. Damn it all!) It was an amazing day and I documented it all here on my Twitter stream !

Dale Dickey stopped by the Aveeno tent to say hi after her Independent Spirit Award win for Best Supporting Actress - she was adorable, charming and super-sweet

Aveeno also introduced us to several of their latest products, including the Smart Essentials collection featuring antioxidant southwood extract, plus their haircare line. (Aveeno makes haircare ? Yes! Who knew?!)

In the makeup chair at Exhale Spa with my adorable makeup artist

We also had a day of pampering at Exhale spa (I’m talking manicure/pedicure, facial, massage, hair and makeup–it was bordering on the obscene) and lunch with celebrity dermatologist  Dr. Jessica Wu , who’s the author of the new beauty/diet/skincare guide  Feed Your Face . I was excited because I was seated near Dr. Wu at lunch, and she told me she was a fan of my book Beauty Confidential !

I've been reading Dr. Jessica Wu's book Feed Your Face, and it's really good! Go get it!

The rest of the weekend was, as you can imagine, amazingly fun but incredibly exhausting. KSned and I went to Mastro’s for our annual pre-Oscars dinner…

…hit up the Vanity Fair DJ night party at Palihouse (was really excited to get the invite to that one)…

…attended Leeza Gibbons‘ Dare2Care charity event at Boa Steakhouse with Sheer Cover (where we met Jamie Lee Curtis)…

and went to Soho House for the Mercedes-Benz Oscar viewing party.

K. also went to the Four Seasons on Saturday afternoon for the L’Oreal Makeup suite, as she wrote .

A rare moment of downtime in the hotel room! Naturally, we popped open some bubbly, cranked the tunes, and took silly photos of ourselves...

Luckily, I was able to recuperate in Palm Springs, where I met the boyfriend’s parents…

…And now I’m in Dallas, having flown in to surprise my father late last night! So very, very fun…but an utterly exhausting week. Thanks to Aveeno, Recycle Bank, Mercedes-Benz, L’Oreal Paris, Alison Brod PR, Vanity Fair, Mastro’s, Palihouse, Shutters on the Beach, the R. family, and the famous K.Sned for making it all possible!

Disclosure: As a Brand Ambassador for Aveeno, Aveeno & Recycle Bank paid for my hotel expenses and secured my invitation to the Independent Spirit Awards. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
