Mascara Review

Posted Dec 22 2007 12:00am

So I finally had a chance to go through all my mascaras to write up a review. Here are all the products I own, minus a clear mascara... top to bottom is Mirenesse 24HR Secret Weapon (black), L'Oreal Telescopic (blackest black), Covergirl Waterproof Lash Exact (very black), Maybelline Define-A-Lash (soft black), Imju Fiberwig (black), and L'Oreal Waterproof Voluminous (black).

Mirenesse 24HR Secret Weapon Mascara ($2-5 sample, $27)

I found out about Mirenesse from BellaSugar - Mirenesse is an Australian line of cosmetics and skincare, and they offer a lot of "free" makeup in full and trial sizes - the only catch is that you pay shipping, which isn't that much. I paid $5 for this little tube, which fits in my palm, but the price is currently $2. The full size mascara runs for $27, and comes in multiple formulas - length, volume, thickness, curl.

I would say that this product is comparable to Imju Fiberwig. Similar to Fiberwig, this mascara covers your lashes with tubes, and you just need some warm water to take it off. They claim that the product is long-wearing, smear-proof, sweat-proof, smudgeproof, sleep-proof, flake free, and water resistant.

This stuff lives up to its name! My lashes stayed curled and looked a lot fuller. Like most Asian women, I have extremely short and straight lashes, so I wasn't expecting too much on the lengthening part, but everything else was great. I wore this stuff to the gym and didn't worry about getting raccoon eyes. I haven't tested the sleep-proof part, mostly because I'm trying to get in the good habit of removing all my makeup at night, but have faith that if I'm ever too tired to wash my face, there won't be a mascara mess on my face the next morning. Definitely worth spending $2 to try it out - the little tube will last you a long time!

L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara ($7.99)

If the picture isn't enough proof, all I can say is WOW. This stuff is awesome. If I ever want a more dramatic look, I know what to use. Telescopic really lengthened my lashes - I didn't know my eyes could stand out that much! My digital camera sucks, but my lashes were longer than they ever have been. The only other time they looked that good was when I tried L'Oreal's Volume Shocking Mascara, but that product made me feel like something was stuck to my lashes. The Telescopic wand takes some time to get used to, but I really love this mascara.

Covergirl Lash Exact ($7.99)

This is one of my everyday mascaras that I'm comfortable wearing to work. The waterproof formula helps it from smearing or smudging during the day, since my lids can get a little oily. There's very little clumping, and my lashes get some good definition and a little length.

Maybelline Define-A-Lash ($7.49)

This is another daily mascara. I like the bright green package - makes it easy to find amongst all the others! The funky plastic brush head is easy to use, and gives some good definition to my lashes for an easygoing look.

Imju Fiberwig ($22)

This is supposed to be one of those HG mascaras, and I'm still on the fence with it. It paints little tubes around your lashes, which is supposed to be better than painting mascara right on them, and they're also smudge/smear/waterproof and come off with a little warm water.

Fiberwig is very similar to Mirenesse Secret Weapon, in my opinion. My only complaint with Fiberwig (vs. Mirenesse) is that even after curling, my lashes get weighed down and lose a bit of their curl, so I feel like I have to curl them again, which is bad. Aside from that, I think this mascara is great.

L'oreal Voluminous ($7.49)

Voluminous is a good mascara, but I think I prefer Telescopic more. This mascara provides some good volume and feels the lightest on my lashes - at least they do during application. It's very light and doesn't make me feel like I'm wearing that much, which can be a good thing.
