Everyone loves to be beautiful and presentable. Everyone wants to give an unforgettable first impression. You glow in pride when someone says “You look fabulous!” or overhear someone comment “She creates such an impact by just the way she dresses.”

No matter how much we try to deny it, people do judge the book by its cover. Many go to great lengths just to create a lasting impression especially when they attend important functions and events, or when they want to close that million dollar contract, nail that interview and even, going on their first date.

So what does it take to get that winning image?

If you want to portray a long lasting impression, especially in the corporate world, you must first know:

• your profession
• who you’re talking to
• what’s the objective
• what image you want to portray
• how much of an impression you want to make

From there, you then proceed to choose your hairstyle , wardrobe, accessories , and learn your etiquette accordingly. The main idea is, in whichever profession you are in, or which status you are at, DO NOT dress sloppily. Nobody likes the idea of looking at something that is painful to the eye. • The style should not be too short, long, tailored or overly feminine. Moderation is the key.
• However, if your hair is shoulder-length or longer, pull it out of your face, or tie it up (in a bun for a more professional look).
• As you mature in age, it’s advisable to keep your hair short. Long hair, if let down, would only make you look older. Whatever was suitable for you when you were younger, may look odd on you now.
• When hair color is changed, modify your make up and clothing colors as well.

Clothes

• Please, do not wear more than 3 colors at one time, unless if you have a specific theme party to attend.

The best length for a skirt is about knee-length. If you’d want it shorter, only go as far as one or two inches above the knee. If you want it past the knee, just below it would be best.
• Make sure your jacket fits comfortably without pulling, budging or sagging. Match your pants by using a blazer.
• If you are heavy on the bottom, go for darker colors like brown or charcoal gray.

Accessories

• Use the right accessories to create your own individuality and presence. Do not over-accessorize.
• Adding ‘glitter’ to your outfit can give you a strong presence, just as long as you don’t overdo it. Remove your big bling blings, loud bracelets or rings. Less is still more. Use buttons and small ear studs in proportion to your size.
• Long flowing scarves used over long dresses expresses femininity.
• Soft, short black scarf wore round the neck on a black collared shirt dress expresses fashionably elegant. However, it is not advisable for ladies with short neck or round and square face shapes.

Black

The color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem serious, evil and gloomy.

It is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors. It also portrays innocence, youth, purity and peace.

Red

Red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing, therefore it gives off the feelings such as anger, passion, love, excitement and aggression. Red would be very distracting if you wear it during the day time. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing.

Blue

It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty.

Green

Green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. Most hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies luck and wealth.

Yellow

While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow can also mean cowardly and deceitful.

Brown

Solid, reliable brown is the color of the earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful. Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.

Purple

The color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, dominance, wisdom, wealth and sophistication. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appeal artificial.

If you want to use colors that create an impact, then wear:

• black,dark blue or dark grey to be authoritative
• yellow, orange, apple green or anything bright if you want to portray fun
• red if you want to attract attention
• brown or beige if you want to be seen as being down to earth
• pastels or white grey if you want to look sweet and soft
• black if you want to look formal, stern, sexy, sensual and slim

Pointers for Suit

• First pair of suit - start with the rich, deep navy blue that depicts success.
• Brown suits are considered unprofessional.
• Men who travel frequently should have at least 2 pairs of suits.
• Do not use polyester. Wool is good and it’s wrinkle-free.
