I included a few recipes for wonderfully easy and natural face masks below. Note that masks should always be applied to freshly cleansed, only slightly damp skin. These are very perishable, so any leftovers should be kept refrigerated and used within 3 days. Enjoy! Rachel
Papaya Skin Mask, appropriate for all skin types (especially lovely for combination skin)
2 Tbs raw papaya, mashed finely
1/2 tsp fresh pineapple juice
1 tsp powdered green algae (optional)
Papaya and pineapple contain papain and bromelain, two enzymes that dissolve oil and dry skin cells. Repeated use of this mask will do wonders, evening skintone and leaving behind soft, glowing skin! Perfect as a once-a-week skin luxury.
Directions: In a small bowl, combine green algae with pineapple juice to form a paste. Mix thoroughly into mashed papaya, until a smooth paste is formed. Gently pat onto clean face and neck with fingers, then lie down for 15 minutes, making sure to lie on a towel as the mixture may run a bit as your skin warms it up. Your face may tingle a bit; no worries - you are feeling the fruit acids at work. Gently rinse off after 15 minutes. Makes 1 mask.
Avocado Dry/Sensitive Skin Mask
1/4 very ripe avocado
2-3 tsp honey, if not vegan
1 tsp olive oil
The high oleic acid and antioxidant levels in avocado make it the ideal anti-aging ingredient for this luxuriously moisturizing, nourishing face mask. Feel free to use several times a week.
Mash avocado with olive oil and honey, if using, very well until a smooth paste is formed. Apply to face and neck, sit back and relax for 20 minutes. Gently rinse. Can also be used as a thoroughly hydrating hair conditioning treatment (should keep on the hair for 30 minutes).
Purifying Clay Mask, for oily and acne-prone skin
1 tbs finely ground clay (use your personal favorite clay: kaolin, french green, or red clay all work beautifully)
1/4 tomato, peeled and seeded
1/4 tsp olive oil
The acids in the tomato act to eradicate acne; the clay absorbs excess oil and tightens pores. Use once a week. Blend tomato in blender until smooth - you may need to add a splash of water. Strain the vegetable liquid into a small bowl, then add clay and oil until a smooth spreadable paste forms. You may need to add another dash of water, depending on how juicy your tomato is. Spread paste onto face and neck as thickly as possible and allow it to stay on skin for 15 minutes. Rinse, gently pat dry, and add light moisturizer.
