Crashing a Personal Grooming Talk

Posted Aug 23 2008 12:00am

Apparently the talk was aimed at the Social Science and Humanities School, particularly the PR students and there I was a little lost Marketing student from Business School, alone and not knowing anyone in the lecture hall. I also had no make-up on because I woke up late and the car was making weird noises.

On the 20th of August 2008, TAR College invited the CEO of Beautilicious, Julie Wong, to do a talk on personal grooming for the soon-to-be college graduates. I think it's good that the college acknowledges the need for students, especially girls to have at least a basic knowledge of grooming and make-up because make-up is a tool that enhances a person's features so that they look more fresh, alert and presentable. Although inner-beauty is of course, most important of all but the ability to portray it on the outside too gives people the impression that the person is not sloppy and actually takes the effort to make themselves look good. It may seem shallow, but first impression counts.

In her 1 and a half hours talk, Julie gave some pointers on how to groom one's self especially when preparing for an interview from the make-up to the fragrance used. She also showed the dos and the don'ts of dressing and hair-styling. She then gave a step-by-step demonstration, with an audience as her model, on how to apply a light make-up using Beautilicious products. During the demonstration, she shared a few basic beauty tips to further enhance the knowledge of the students on make-up.

After the talk, I had a little chat with Julie about Beautilicous, the significance of make-up and a bunch of stuff (I didn't exactly prepare an interview so it was just a general chat). Julie (an experienced cosmetologist who was previously with Clinique and YSL) also taught me how to properly place and use the Instant Eyeshadow which I've previously failed to apply successfully, so I'll definitely try it again since I still have the other side.

This homegrown brand adapts the style of big players, Benefit and Stila in their cosmetic products but at a much more affordable price.
"Beautilicious is a mass-tige brand that offers beauty products that are different from the rest. It combines premium skin-care ingredients with affordability, all presented in luxurious, stylish packaging."
Beautilicious is hoping to go international by expanding the line to countries out of Malaysia such as Dubai, Japan, Egypt and Vietnam.

The star products are the make-up kits that give step-by-step instructions on how to achieve a certain look and also the instant eyeshadow. One of their top sellers is the award-winning Arch It Right Kit which is an eyebrow shaping kit that comes with templates, eyebrow powder, a brush and a tweezer. I've been quite intrigued by this kit for awhile now but although the price is fair compared to the counter brands, my pocket is just way too tight at the moment.

At the end of the talk, there were products for sale at 20% off which really bummed me out because I didn't go to the ATM before the talk and I only had 5 bucks in my wallet. *sighs* I'd like to pick up a blush pan but oddly, they're not available at all of the Watsons that carry the brand.

Although a few of the students in the audience had short attention spans, the talk was overall quite informative and gave good messages. I hope the college would have more talks like this in the future. My only concern would be that the demonstration was rather difficult to watch for those who were sitting at the back of the lecture hall. But then again, the college isn't exactly high-tech so my expectations weren't very high. Perhaps next time they should have beauty workshops which would be more effective.
