Behind the scenes at the Independent Spirit Awards

Posted Mar 02 2012 4:34pm

I didn't see Kate Beckinsale at the Independent Spirit Awards--and so really have no reason to be posting this photo--but I just thought her hair looked too phenomenal to not mention

In all the excitement over the Oscars, I completely forgot to tell you guys about my experience the day before the Oscars, at the Independent Spirit Awards. Are we over Oscar stuff yet? That’s what I get for being lazy this week. (No! Not lazy! Very busy writing my book! Scout’s honor!) It was my second year at the ISAs, which is sort of like Oscar’s hippie surfer cousin: laid-back, on the beach, totally low-key, and a guaranteed awesome time.

My first stop, naturally, was the gifting suite – celebrities and free goodies? Well, okaaay. I suppose. If we must. While, alas, there were no celebs on site when I showed up, I did have the chance to see two of my favorite beauty people in the entire world: Marie-Laure Fournier of Fournier Communications and Jeannine Morris of Beauty Sweet Spot . (We ended up having a wine-soaked dinner that night at the Sunset Marquis, where Chace Crawford was next to Jeannine for 15 minutes without her realizing it and Marie-Laure gave us the inside beauty scoop on Best Actor winner Jean Dujardin, exclusively groomed by Marie-Laure’s glam French clients Leonor Greyl haircare and Talika skincare.)

Votre Vu Tarte D'Amande Almond Pie Body Souffle Cream

Marie-Laure was in the gifting suite, meanwhile, with her client Votre Vu, a luxury French line I learned about last year and whose Tarte D’Amande Almond Pie Body Souffle I have been addicted to ever since. (Funny enough, while I only like musky scents for fragrance, I have a weird affinity for sweet, sugary, and gourmand flavors in body lotions and creams.)

Wella Enrich Moisturizing Treatment for Coarse hair - love me some intensive conditioner!

The other beauty client in the suite was Wella Professionals, who I did some work with during the Golden Globes and Oscars this year. Also there: New Balance, Emergen-C, Fashion Forms, Bowers & Wilkins (super cool headphones in white; I want!), AMC, Carlos Falchi, the Ritz-Carlton New York (who was giving away a weekend stay) and Crunch (who gave away a yearlong membership). Here’s where the perks of being a celebrity outweigh all the annoyances that come with being famous: you just walk into the suite and are handed bags of free products left, right and center. Nice work, if you can get it!

Carson Kressley and Kim Johnson from Dancing With the Stars ham it up in front of the New Balance gifting area

People who swung by the suite included Anna Kendrick, Benjamin Bratt, Carson Kressley, Ian Somerhalder, Lucy Liu, Shailene Woodley, Terrence Howard, William H. Macy, and good ol’ Wilmer Valderrama.

After leaving the suite, I chatted with my friend Cindy Bokma from Hello Dollface , snapped some photos and video, and had a bathroom run in with Patricia Clarkson, who was gorgeous and glowing.

I seriously need to get a better camera, since my BlackBerry photos are the pits, but the behind-the-scenes montage I made for Pevonia turned out fairly cute, so I’ll post it here! Until next year, ISAs!
