Oral sex is the stimulation of the genitals using the mouth and tongue. It is one of the ways in which sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are most frequently passed on.

You can catch an infection through having just one sexual partner, although the chance of catching an STD increases the more partners you have.

Infections commonly caught through oral sex are:

  • chlamydia,
  • gonorrhea,
  • genital herpes, and
  • syphilis.

Infections less frequently passed on include:

  • HIV,
  • hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C,
  • genital warts,
  • pubic lice.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of an STD vary depending on the type of infection. However, most STDs are completely treatable if detected early enough. So, if you suspect you may have an infection, it's important to visit your local Family Planning clinic as soon as possible.

If left untreated, STDs are not only uncomfortable and embarrassing, but can seriously affect your health and fertility.
