Thoughts of death and self harm.....old patterns

Posted Aug 15 2013 12:00am
Hello friends and other readers,

I am confused. I received a letter from my psychiatrist who first diagnosed me with Schizophrenia in 2005, and then wasn't my doctor again until this past March. I switched back to him because I think he's a good doctor, and better than the ones I kept getting switched to at the community mental health center, because they always have a high turnover of staff. Plus, he works in the local hospitals, and the doctor there didn't have any hospital privileges. So I went into the hospital where he worked, on purpose, because I wanted to go where he would be my doctor.

The letter he wrote, per my request, was for  the university I attend, to reappeal their decision to deny me financial aid to finish school. He said all the things I needed him to say  in the letter, but there was one weird thing.

He said my current diagnosis is "Schizophrenia, Paranoid Type".

I have been being told by doctors since 2006 that I had Schizoaffective Disorder. Maybe the name doesn't matter that much because the treatment is basically the same, but I even renamed my blog to call this a blog about Schizoaffective Disorder years ago, and names do have meanings.

I am curious, have any of you had your diagnosis changed repeatedly over the years? This happened to me numerous times, where I was told - incorrectly - that I had Bipolar or Major Depression, for years before anybody realized I was psychotic.

There is a lot of meaning in a name of an illness.

This has thrown me for a loop.
