Work it Out!

Posted Aug 20 2013 10:02am

Let me just say that working out is amazing!  Sometimes you just have days where you are like “HEY I’M AWESOME AND MY BODY IS AWESOME”.  Yeah, definitely had one of those days.  I’ve had a lot of ups and downs this summer on the fitness train.  I worked out every single weekday in June but then didn’t eat so great on the weekends.  July came and I got a little lazy…only working out every now and then and sticking to walks instead of running.  August brought an influx of emotions with a tragic loss but here we are almost 2/3 of the way through August and I’m pulling through.  Many of you may remember that I gave up the scale for the summer.  Well, I will admit that I did weigh myself this morning.  Oops, does that make me a sinner?  Probably not but I figured it would be nice to see where I’m at since having so much craziness.  While I won’t share with you what my number is just yet, I will say it is lower than it was when summer started.  That, to me, is a success.  We’ll see where I’m at on Labor Day.

a silly number on a scale can't wipe this smile off my face.

Yesterday I went down to my favorite three mile route.  I had planned on only walking, which I did for about the first .75 miles.  Then I was met with a huge downhill portion so I chose to run.  I ended up running for a little over half a mile.  After walking for a little bit I decided to do 1:1 intervals.  Run a minute then walk a minute.  Seemed simple enough.  My running portions were done around a 9:15 pace which is smoking for this girl.  I think my lowest pace was 8:28 but remember I only did it for one minute.  Walking never felt so good.

After my walk/run for three miles, I went to the gym to lift some weights.  While I didn’t follow a specific workout plan here’s what I did (in no particular order):

  • Bicep curls, 15 pounds each arm, 30 reps
  • Overhead squats, 65 pounds, 18 reps
  • One legged lunges, 10 reps each leg
  • Benchpress, 65 pounds, 10 reps
  • Medicine ball sit ups, 10 pounds, 30 reps
  • Russian twists with medicine ball, 10 pounds, 80 reps
  • Medicine ball reach up to toes, 10 pounds, 20 reps
  • Bench bar row, 35 pounds, 20 reps
  • Overhead press, 12 pounds each hand, 40 reps
  • Dumbbell row, 15 pounds each hand, 20 reps
  • Clean and jerk, 55 pounds, 20 reps

torched 736 calories by getting a run/walk in and some gym time.

Nothing too fancy and nothing too hard.  But when I got home it felt so hard to walk up the stairs.  That to me is a sign of a great workout.  My clothes were completely drenched and it felt awesome.  I will say that I probably should have put on some BodyGlide since my hot shower revealed some pretty chafed places.  I love looking in the mirror and not cringing at what I see.  Major progress both emotionally and physically.  I’m looking forward to hitting up the gym more this week and maybe trying to incorporate longer running portions to get back to where I was.
