Whew... That Was A Close One.

Posted Aug 04 2009 6:41pm
Good morning!

I know that I have been pushing my body right to the edge. It is this sort of intentional insanity that will either give me a great race in Toronto or an injury between now and then. But I feel I have to do this if I am going to finally get that marathon PR. It is the only way I will know once and for all.

Anyway... my body decided to push back a little this week in the form of a pulled right hamstring. It happened Thursday in the middle of an 8 mile run at a planned 6:08 pace. All of a sudden, Zing! I actually felt the muscle spasm and the pain was immediate. I thought to myself "You really did it this time!" I got right on the foam roller (possibly the world's greatest tool for runners) and really started to work the hamstring. It was still sore, but I had another 4 miles left on the workout so I did a tenative 8:35 pace and it actually made the muscle feel a little better. What a relief. Took it easy on Friday and Saturday in preparation for this morning's 20 miler.

Absolutely beautiful morning as I hit the trail right around 7:00. I took it easy from the start and the Garmin kept me on an honest 7:39 to 7:49 pace. I was aware of my hamstring for the first 10 miles outward, but for the most part it was behaving. I made the turnaround and headed back keeping the pace mostly in the 7:30range. Miles 17 and 18 were 7:18s, but I felt the hamstring getting a little sore so I backed off and finished a nice 20 miler in 2:32:34. Average pace was 7:38.

I am hoping for a nice easy recovery week and then an 18 mile test next Sunday. My plan is to shoot for right around 2:03 or roughly 6:50 pace. My last 18 miler a couple weeks later should be right around 2:01 and change. I'm really starting to get excited as Toronto gets closer and closer.

Best of luck with your training and take care.
