What are Spanx?

A friend told me that most runners are running away from something or running toward something. I have to agree, but add that I also like to run in circles and run going nowhere, like when I'm on my basement rat wheel. To not run, is not an option. I can't be a runner that runs only when the weather is good or when their busy schedule permits time. I don't have the luxury of being a runner that fits his running into his life. I've got to fit my life around my running lest I go to the bad place, which is my head.

A good 40 minute run will buy me a two day pass to thinking that is not cluttered by self destructive thoughts or thoughts of being less than you. I'm sure it has to do with being born with unbalanced brain chemistry and running supplies the endorphin kick to my neural synapses to get things working the way they should. Since I don't understand the bio-chemistry of runnings effect on the brain, I like to call it magic and I think many runners would agree.

I also can't afford to be stupid about my training because my biggest fear is a long term injury than keeps me from running for weeks. Fortunately, even when the I-T band man was courting me, the bastard never kept me down for long. I could at least get in a few miles before he started stabbing me in the outer knee with his sharp ice pick. I can't skip out on my strength training either. The last thing I wanted to do was go for my Master Sean beating, but I had no other choice. I've been feeling out of balance, too, with a small nagging knot in my lower back from sitting long hours in the work cave staring at my database.

So, as long as I keep running my brain is happy...a normal place to be. The secondary benefit is I don't have to wear Spanx. I never heard of these until yesterday. My redheaded boss was asking the psychology instructor where she got her "spanx". She wanted to get some. I thought she was referring to her over-sized dangling earrings. Huh??? "What the heck are spanx?" Apparently they are a line of spandex infused body wear for women for smoothing out back fat, butt dimples, and fat rolls so that you look better in clothes. The psych instructor pulled up her dress slacks to show me what looked like to me flesh colored tights without feet. I thought they were pretty unsexy and I think I'd be embarrassed to take off my outer clothes in front of my man for him discover he has yet another layer to go to get to the real flesh, which would then spill forth, unfettered, like rising dough bursting from the pan into the surrounding bed.

It's certainly easier to go out and spend $40 on Spanx body-wear than spend months working on your muscle tone. But I guess it's worth it if it makes women feel better about themselves. I wear super-trussed up padded Victoria's Secret bras for the same reason; they give the illusion that I have substantial breasts. My husband commented on the unfairness, the false advertising that women resort to fool men. Mike said, how would you like it if every "package" you checked out at a 5k was really a soft tubular 8 inch sausage sewn into running briefs? Hmmmm, I thought, he had a point here....
