Here I am at the start of week two of my training and I’m 13 days out to the first 5k for the year. At least I will have a few weeks of training in before doing the first one this year. Yes, in the past I have just shown up and pretty much started my running season by doing a race with no training. This year I will have shaken off some of the cob webs and run the distance several times before doing a formal race. The weather should be cold and at least I’ll look good in my cold wear gear even if I run slowly. I am afraid that some of the people at work that I have talked into doing the race will blow by me on race day. Even those who never have run and or done a 5k before have been training fairly hard. I can just imagine that they will go by me and be having a beverage at the finish line when I finish. I know I shouldn’t think of or worry about such things, but I do. I guess I’ll stick with my primary goal of doing my best not to be the last one to finish. So far I have succeeded in doing so but have been as close as fourth from the back once in a half marathon. The fortunate thing is typically I don’t know where I placed until I look online or in the paper the next day.
Weather wise we missed another major dumping of snow today. Looks like it passed us to the south. But we did get some additional snow on Saturday and yes I did some more snow cardio yesterday to clear it. During the heaviest snow fall it was less than a quarter mile of visibility. I was amazed to see runners on the trail near my house running in the snow during the storm. What a motivator to see these runners speeding along the trail with a snow globe falling of snow around them. The image would have made a great Christmas card or computer wall paper. My luck I would try and do the same, hit some black ice and break a leg. Which brings up a question I have, does anyone use special shoes during the colder months or when it is wet outside? I was thinking of buying the Brooks ASR shoes but have read mixed reviews about them. Any advice for me on shoes for such situations? Looking for maybe a stability shoe that can get me out in the elements when the window of opportunity presents itself. I have to get off of the treadmill as much as possible.
