Wasting Water a Problem in India’s Road Races

Posted Jan 15 2013 12:24pm

There are a lot of things to consider when organizing or running a distance race, but some concerned folks in drought-troubled India are worried about something new: runners discarding unused water .

V Ramachandran, who has organized three half marathons and will run his fourth marathon, says, he has experienced the problem first-hand as an organizer.

“People just don’t care and waste water. The solution is to provide little cups of water.” feels Ramachandran, who will be running his fourth marathon.

S Swaminathan, who organized a 10km run on January 6, found it heartwarming that 90% water bottles were returned as “it was a cold day and nobody wanted to drink.” His solution is similar to Ramachandran’s -provide smaller bottles. “We are all guilty of dumping half-used water bottles at some point of our lives,” says Swaminathan.

Latha VR, who is new to the running culture, finds the amounts of water being wasted appalling. “All manner of runners take a sip of water from a 300ml bottle and then dump it,” says Latha.

I sympathize. Clearly we need to export to India some of our water-carrying inventions, such as the water bottle gloves , the armband water bottle , or other ways to make water part of your racing apparel .
