Uphill Running Strengthens Hip Muscles

Posted by Heather J.

Runnersworld.com reports that based on a study conducted by a Japanese team, uphill running produced a much greater “activation and muscle torque of the muscle groups surrounding the hip joints, such as the hamstrings and iliopsoas” when compared to level running. Also, “the knee extension torque” was less during uphill running. These results seem to argue for the benefit of uphill running in addition to on-the-flat training, and also could mean that one or the other form of training might be possible during times of slight muscle injury.
