A few weeks ago NKotB and BSB were on the Today Show. Come on, don’t act like you have no clue who I am talking about- New Kids on the Block and Back Street Boys. I was in middle school when these two bands were popular and I never was a fan, honestly. I did cuff my jeans, bud did not jam out with these guys.
Hearing them on the Today Show brought back memories of the late 80′s and early 90′s, but worst of all it got stuck in my head this GD song: “Step by Step”. Oh man, in yoga class I hear it. On the treadmill I hear it. I hear it when I am trying to drown out the sound of my commute. This. Song. Is. Everywhere!
This song has been so stuck in my head that I either have gone crazy or Jordan, Jonathan, Joey, Donnie and Danny were absolutely friggin’ brilliant. Check out these lyrics and think of it as a runner, with the “we” being you and running:
“Step one, we can have lots of fun”
“Step two, there’s so much we can do”
“Step three, it’s just you and me”
“Step four, I can give you more”
“Step five, don’t you know that the time is right”
Holy sh!t! Genius, right? Don’t see it? Well let’s me break down each of these steps and tell you why I think that NKotB could possibly have the greatest most inspirational lyrics ever written for runners.
Step one: this is obvious, you and running can have lots of fun if you get out there and do it.
Step two: yes, together there is a lot you can do together, like rave runs and marathons
Step three: well duh, it is just you and the road running, getting away from it all, the pure joy of this sport.
Step four: can’t we all dig a little deeper and train a little harder, work a little harder to hit our goals and set PR’s?
Step five: race day, the time is here to go balls out and leave it all on the course.
Right! I am so not crazy. Just writing it makes me see the pure brilliance. My hope is now that I pushed out this post that this song will cease to be replayed over and over and over and over again in my head!
In full disclosure, I did have to look up the lyrics, I only remembered step 1 and 2. In my frustration of having this tune on repeat in my head with no idea of the other steps I set out to find what they were and found this pure golden set of inspiration.
Okay, be honest, NKotB or BSB? Am I crazy or can this actually relate to running? It is the late 80′s and early 90′s where are you and what are you doing? Did I just implant this song in your head?
