Training update Week 20: Wherein I gain a PR/PB in the SMH Half Marathon.

Posted May 20 2010 12:00am
Last Sunday I ran my sixth Half Marathon, and my third SMH Half Marathon . I managed to complete the race in an official time of 1:48:03. My previous best performance at an HM was in my very first race at that distance in 2007. So the drought has finally broken somewhat! A post-race highlight of the HM was the chance to catch up with some dailymile friends after the race. A great bunch of blokes.

I’ve used this new HM time to undertake a final tweaking of my training paces for my marathon training program which commences the week of 30 May, so only 10 days to go!

I wrote to Professor Bill Pierce at The Furman Institute of Running Science and Technology this week to seek their approval for my putting my training program online. I had a really nice and encouraging email back from Dr Pierce, and they are happy for me to do so. The plan is from the book by Bill Pierce, Scott Murr and Ray Moss. I’ll post it online in the next week or so. In the coming weeks I’ll post more here and talk on the B-HAG Running podcast about the FIRST marathon program in more detail. This is very much an experiment for me, working closely to a very strict program, and I have no idea how it will go. However, I do know that some of the improvements I have made over the last two-to-three months are attributable to some of the training principles I’ve adopted from the book. Anyway, the proof of this pudding will be in the eating on September 19!

In the meantime, I’m just going to have a couple of weeks of joy runs to keep the kms up and not worry about speed work, tempo runs or the intensity of my cross training. The calm before the storm!

Here are the stats for the week
Week 20
16 May: 21.1 km
18 May: 5.2 km
20 May: 13.6 km
Total for week: 39.9 km
Total for 2010: 658.4 km
