Looking at the calendar today I realized that i skipped one whole month of long runs.
So I decided, what the heck , I feel good, let's go for a half marathon before breakfast. But in an attempt to not kill myself, I'll use the Galloway method. Alright. I'll admit, Mr. Galloway has something going here with his theory. I ran my fastest 1/2 marathon race using this method. And today, doing an easy 5:00 run/1:00 walk intervals, I had negative splits and felt strong the entire run (13.70 miles), despite the fact I haven't run anything over 4 miles in 4 weeks.
But I can't help but feel like a cheater.
Don't get me wrong, I am not selling myself short for my run this morning. I feel good, it felt good, and according to Coach Garmin, I was "running" 12.31 miles and only walked the equivalent of 1.4 miles. And I'm not short changing anyone who uses the Galloway method. Heck, I don't care if you run, jog, walk, crawl, or skip over the finish line, I give you kudos for being out there and finishing.
But still, I think of running as an endurance sport, and endurance as, well, NOT walking. For me at least. (am I the only crazy one who thinks like this?) I'm way too competitive with myself sometimes. However, I did remind myself : Heather, you are not a competitive runner (in the sense that I'm not a professional or anything...Lord knows I am competitive, haha) you have two little ones, and just got into this sport not too long ago. Cut yourself some slack already!
And so I did. And I had a good run. Even if I am a cheater ;)
BACK TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED GU REVIEW: Blueberry Pomegranate ROCTANE GU: made me gag, didn't give me stomach issues, definitely gave me energy (2X caffeine). I highly approve. Orange Burst Gu (with caffeine). Ehh. Tasted pretty gross. Didn't feel any energy surge. In fact my stomach was rumbling out of hunger 15 minutes after I ate it.
Chocolate Outrage Gu: When you all told me you loved this flavor gu, none of you used the key words "this stuff tastes EXACTLY like chocolate cupcake frosting" WHY WERE YOU HOLDING OUT ON ME?!?! I am in love. Love love love. Almost like I was eating something I shouldn't' before a run!
WRIGHTSOCK CHALLENGE: At the beginning of the month I was invited to join the WRIGHTSOCK Challenge for the Runners Lounge. I gladly accepted, and was sent 6 pairs of different Wrightsocks to try out and review. And here's what I've got for ya so far:
SLT: very low cut, very thin sock. Perfect for boot camp or the gym, but I don't think I'd wear them on any sort of long distance run...just too thin.
SLR: good socks. Lower cut like the SLT but a bit thicker. Nothing too special about them, but I would definitely wear them to run in. SLX: I love love love this pair. My favorite in the box, and I've worn and washed them probably 10 times in the last two weeks. I LOVE THEM (did I mention that already?) I wore them today for the 13 miler and had zero chaffing or blisters. They are low cut, but not so low that the back of my sneakers would rub on my shoes. They never slipped down and my feet were not sweating. A+++. I'll even pay for my next pair :) Which at this rate, may be soon....I've already turned one orange from an incident involving a toddler and his daddy's cup of Orange Sunkist. oops.
DLX were just toooo thick for South Carolina in the summer. While the cushion was great, my feet were sweating after a mile. I can't wait to try them in the winter, but for now, they are a no-go.
PRO-BAR: (almost done with my reviews, haha): The awesome people at Pro-Bar sent me not only one, but two boxes of Pro-Bars. Probably because I was so slack in putting up my review they must have thought I didn't get them (Sorry! But I appreciate all the bars!) Let me tell you, they were a big hit in our house. My toddler, who never eats anything, downed an entire Cherry Pretzel bar. ProBars each feature at least 15 whole ingredients in them, and you can certainly taste it. They are marketed as a "vegan meal replacement bar" (whole food, organic, and 100% vegan), so be warned there are 350+ calories per bar. However, as I said those calories are from lots of nuts and whole foods, so it's not like you are downing two hostess cupcakes . But I certainly felt full after just one, so it would be a great post long run snack (i've been known to eat an entire subway sandwhich post run, haha). Check them out http://theprobar.com/
