Things are rounding into shape for a sub 3:03 marathon

Despite some soreness in my left foot, I actually feel really good after yesterday's confidence building 18 miler in 1:57:27 (6:31 pace which is probably about 6:50 outside). Yes, it was on a treadmill which is so much easier compared to hitting the trails, but it felt great to go fast and not have all the pounding. It also gave me a chance to reflect back on 18 milers on the treadmill last year and compare my fitness now and then. My best was mid 2009 when I felt like I was in really good shape and ran a 1:57:07. Interestingly, I was confident I had a 2:56 marathon in me although I never came close to achieving that goal. I have to admit that even this abbreviated training in 2010 and my slow recovery from a number of injuries has me believing a sub 3:03 is definitely in the works. If only the marathon was so simple...
This week will be mostly mild recovery runs with a little bit of speedwork and overdistance 10k work on Thursday. If the weather and trails cooperate, I will put in a hard 12 miler on Sunday at planned 6:22 pace. I have done so much reading this year on how to better train for the marathon and my goal is to have 6:55 pace feel as easy as possible on race day. Again, if only it was that simple.
Best of luck to everybody with your running and training. May you be injury free and have at least 8 of your 10 toenails intact. I'm 6 for 10 right now and that is probably my average for the last couple years.
