One thing I’ve noticed is how as runners, we get to enjoy running more often than many others enjoy their pastimes. A good friend loves golf. Go to his office, he has golf items on his desk and wall. He’s known as a golfer. Ask him about his golf game, I get, “I’ve only been on the course a few times this year. But I’ve been to the range to hit a bucket of balls.”
A bucket of balls! I can’t imagine this. It sure seems lots of other “enthusiasts” don’t get a chance to enjoy their activities and sports as frequently as runners.
I’m grateful to be able to enjoy running often, and generally on my own terms. Occasionally time or life keeps me from running when or as far as I want, but fortunately it’s not tee times, an available court, a broken bike, or a foursome. Every morning presents a chance to do what I enjoy most. And while my score or handicap or average or whatever doesn’t get measured each day, I seem to learn a bit about myself, running, relationships, and living. And by and large, I do seem to get better at my running.
Of course, I google blog searched us. The stats show far more blogs about running than golf, tennis, bowling, gambling square dance, bicycling, NASCAR, iPhones—even more than those blogs bashing Wal-Mart and loving Starbucks. The number of running blogs is almost catching up with sex—okay, we have a few million to go on that topic.
So it seems not only are runners able to find time to enjoy our running, but we have time to connect with other runners as well. How cool is that!
Runners form a natural network. Runners help other runners and are interested in others--their running, lives, training, racing, insights, and accomplishments, and challenges. We actually hold some of the most interesting, important human conversations.
I hope runners are getting a chance to enjoy running often and getting connected to other great runners. Thanks to all the individual blogger runners and centralized sites like Complete Running who are a creating great running community.
