I am receiving the same message from coaches, teachers and parents...kids are sick. Things are no different on our team at WV or with the schools involved in yesterday’s GSL dual meets around the league. Despite the break in GSL competition last week teams are limping through this week in hopes to be healthy next week and more importantly in two weeks at the District Meet, that’s right boys and girls the District Meet is now less than two weeks away.
Despite the rampant illness affecting every team, GSL duals went off as scheduled. I headed out to Finch to watch NC, LC, G-Prep, and U-H on a very chilly afternoon and drug my poor daughter to the meet. She was a trooper and didn’t complain once while we traipsed back and forth across Finch Arboretum with Brando.
In the girls’ race LC’s Allison Keenan and Calli Vanderwilde and NC’s Molly Martin latched on to NC’s Katie Knight for the first half of the race. Knight pulled away during the second mile and continued to extend her lead to the finish. She ran the 5K course in 19:59. Kennan held on for second and with LC’s strong depth outlasted the field. GP’s Doohan moved through to finish third. The Tigers picked up three wins vs. NC (24 – 31), Prep (23 – 32), and University (18 – 37.) Prep slipped by NC (26 – 29) and NC got a win over University (20 – 35.)
NC boys nationally ranked team quickly jumped to the front of the race with five guys leading the pack through the first mile. LC’s Chris Ennis, Kenji Bierig, and Derek Alcorn, and University’s Jon Smith hitched a ride with NC’s pack. NC’s Ben Johnston took charge in the second mile and split the pack apart. NC runners drifted back while LC's top three(Ennis, Bierig, and Alcorn) runners moved through with Chris Ennis finishing second. U-hi’s Jon Smith made a late charge in Bierig but came up short. NC got victories over LC (25 – 33), Prep (16 – 45), and U-hi (20 – 40), with strong front running LC won the battle for fifth in the GSL with victories over Prep (20 – 35) and University (23 – 32.)
