Supplement The Run

More often than not I get caught up in running.  I do love running.  There is something about the constant challenge each run provides that keeps me coming back for more.  In the big picture of fitness I do however understand that other activities can help supplement my running.  Over the past month I decided to give some of those a try.  Let’s see how it all went. 

I began this supplement the run quest with some different circuit type training.  I chose options like the 30 Day Abs Challenge with StrongLikeSusan and with some routines I found on Pinterest of all places.  You can check out my board here….

Next came my first ever yoga class.  I’ve used dvd’s, yogadownloads and exercise tv on demand in the past but have never taken a real class among other people.  When one of my friends invited me to beach yoga I could not resist.  Could you?

The sand creates an extra challenge in balance but does provide a soft landing for those daring enough to try advanced poses like the head stand.  Impressive!

When I gave into the “peer pressure” of two friends at work I joined them at our office gym and took a Kickboxing class offered during our lunch hour.  I was hesitant but once I got over feeling self conscious I actually enjoyed it.  The instructor was full of energy and took us through a fast heart rate elevating routine that ended in a round of squats that left my legs noodles.

Finally, after a 6 year hiatus I decided to pick up a golf club again.

I decided to joined the annual work scramble golf tournament for the first time since I started working there four years ago. I hear it is a lot of fun and teams are comprised of A, B and C players for a best ball play.  I hit the driving range to reacquaint myself with addressing the ball and found it was much like riding a bike….it all came back to me.  I enjoyed my first night back at the range with friends from work so I decided to go again yesterday. Oh, I’ve got work to do, but I find it to be a good workout of the shoulders and believe it or not your oblique muscles.  I think I might have a new hobby. 

Yes, running remains my favorite all around fitness activity, but I found that I love the challenge and enjoyment of trying new things.  I believe by supplementing these new activities into my lifestyle they will only enhance my overall running efforts.
