Staying Motivated to Run and a #ChristmasFail

Posted Dec 10 2012 10:34am
I get a lot of questions this time of year about how to stay motivated to stay on course with a training plan and sticking with it through the holidays.

This time of year is FULL of temptations... Candy cane hot chocolate, Peppermint White Mochas, christmas cookies, fudge, chocolates, evenings spent with friends and family, movie nights and holiday parties. Tis the season - the hardest season of the year to maintain your healthy lifestyle and fitness plan.

But what you have to remember is that living healthy is all about balance and moderation. There's nothing wrong with indulging every now and then! Enjoy a cookie and hot chocolate with friends; drink lots of water during the day; make healthy substitutions when you can and find healthier ways to make your favourite treats and meals.

And of course, make it a priority to get your sweat on daily! It might mean getting up a little early for a quick run before work, a spin class at lunchtime, a trip to the gym or a workout at home in the evening, but make it a priority. Exercising is a great way to burn off holiday stress (and cookies!)

I find the best way to keep motivated to run this year is to run with friends. I've noticed that most of my runs lately have been with either a friend or a group. It's hard to bail on plans to run when you're meeting someone! Plus it gets dark out so early this time of year it's nice not running alone. And it makes great use of my time to be able to spend time with friends AND get a workout in!

Running with friends last weekend

This weekend I ran 5 miles on Saturday with boy (yay for sweaty dates!) and on Sunday trusty running buddy Erin and I got in a good 10 miles, building up for our upcoming half marathon in February.

In other news, Ryan and I finally started decorating the new place for the holidays...

But we had a bit of a rookie Christmas fail......

You might notice our tree was a little crooked? THIS happened about half an hour later:

The carnage:

Next time we tie the tree to the wall!! Maybe twice!!

How do you stay on track over the holidays?

How do you stay motivated to work out or exercise?

Anyone else have their tree fall over this year?
