State Meet 09

Posted Nov 07 2009 10:02pm
Great Races today! AP and I zig-zaged the course getting video at different spots and trying to score the meet.

My thoughts on the meet...

3A girls: I was very impressed with NC's Katie Knight and the Shadle girls especially their top 3. SP's Andrea Nelson looked great while she worked her way from about 10th to 4th in the last mile. Andrea's XC career at State goes like this...2nd, 1st, 1st, and 4th. I haven't done the research but that has got to be one of the best all time.

4A girls: I totally blew this call!!! I thought Gig Harbor had won it hands down. They were fourth. Mead's Baylee Mires and LC's Alison Keenan had impressive top finishes (5th and 10th.)

3A boys: NC's top three (Ben Johnston, Alex Aliva, and Casey Adams) were amazing today all finishing in the top 6. Mt Spo looked solid with the top 3 in the top 23 (Allan Schroeder, Hunter Johnson and Connor Jones) and I thought they had a shot at second. As I was writing the teams down I used a "P" for Peninsula and Seattle Prep so that messed me up when I went to score it. Schrorder had guts going for the win by racing up front. He finished 7th. Eli Dietz with the return of his legs looked strong in the last mile for the Wildcats. NC's Vince Hamilton was in the JV race last year (22nd?) and finished in the top 20 (17th) today.

4A boys: What happened at the start? Why did it take so long to reset the race? At the mile mark Ferris looked great with two ahead of Jackson's number one and their five up towards the front. At the two mile mark Ferris had it in the bag. At this point I noticed Coliton moving and LC's trio of Kenji Bierig, Chris Ennis, and Derek Alcorn. When they came around near the driving range I said to my son "holy crap look at Kenji." He was flying by people. We walked toward the finish and saw Zimmerman fly by his teammate Domini and about 10 other guys. After Ferris and Jackson I thought LC, Ike and Gig looked good. I missed Issaquah. Bierig worked his way up to 4th, Ennis to 16th, and Alcorn to 28th. Mead's Gardner (wearing old school neon green) finished an impressive 6th for the freshman.

When did they start giving out 16 medals (or ribbons?)

Hopefully with schools shifting classifications next year the GSL and CBBN can work out a Regional format that is good for the sport.

Next year...check back in August! I will say one thing...the class of 2010 is very strong for the 4A GSL school and west side you might have an opening.

I know a never make 2A comments...
2A Girls: Great job GNL teams! Cheney 4th, Deer Park 5th, and Riverside 8th.

2A Boys: GNL teams have some work to do, which I am sure they will. District 1 teams went 1 - 4 (Burlington-Edison, Sehome, Squalicum, and Lakewood)
