Have you ever finished a long run or race and noticed salt on your face from sweating? Aside from looking a little crusty, it’s nothing to worry about…most of the time. If you’re running more than two hours, be sure to replace that lost salt through your diet after the run. If you drink excessive fluid during a long run, you could be at risk for hyponatremia (low blood sodium level). Weigh yourself prior to and following longer runs to determine your sweat rate; each pound that you lose represents a 16-ounce deficit. A weight gain indicates an excessive fluid intake, which can be dangerous. As you acclimate to hot weather, the salt concentration in sweat will decrease and the sweat rate will increase to assist with the cooling process.
