Running While Pregnant: Stay Hydrated!

A major concern for most pregnant women doing any form of physical exercise is to stay well hydrated. I experimented with many different techniques during my pre-pregnancy training runs. I've tried hydration belts, stashing water bottles along my run route, hiding a cooler in my trunk at the route midpoint, and once I carried a bottle in my hand.

There are pros and cons to all of these methods. An improperly fitting hydration belt can shift, bounce or chafe. Carrying a water bottle on a run of ANY distance is annoying and tiresome. Stashing water along your route could get warm if not well-shaded, or as my sister experienced, stolen. What loser steals your water bottle?

Out of all these options, the hydration belt works best for me. One of my first pregnancy runs with my hydration belt left me with a horrible cramping feeling in my lower abdomen for the rest of the day. I called my OB/GYN in a panic, thinking: Now you've done it. Am I going to have a miscarriage? It ended up being fine. But I did realize that for the pregnant runs, I would have to invest in a new belt, the next size up.

I used to use the Fuel Belt brand. Now I'm pushing Nathan's hydration belts to every runner I know. They stay-put and don't tend to stretch out after months of wear, tear and abuse. The molded plastic holders keep the water bottles secure. Many times my Fuel Belt bottles would slip out onto the ground; once this happened in the middle of a race and I nearly tripped the girl behind me. Dangerous!

Even better, the Nathan belt bottles hold 10 oz. each. They also have a wide opening to shove in some ice cubes. The Fuel Belt bottles hold 8 oz. each.

I usually have a 4-bottle belt, but for my pregnancy runs, I purchased the 2-bottle belt. This is because I'm certainly not running the distances or length of time I was covering prior to becoming pregnant, so I don't need to cart four bottles around my waist. It's bad enough the pressure of a pregnant belly makes me have to pee 10 minutes into a run!

Check out these great belts if you haven't already. It's a must have for any runner in this summer heat. They also are great for mommies-to-be working out outside and in need of convenient hydration.
