In Tibet, turf wars have broken out over areas of land that contain the valuable Cordyceps sinensis fungus , produced by caterpillars. In Asia, the fungus is prized for its alleged healing properties and, of course, is believed to be an aphrodisiac.
Like other such substances , the caterpillar fungus is also linked to athletic performance. In 1993, the legendary psychotic track coach Ma Junren credited a concoction of caterpillar fungus and turtle blood soup for the world records his athletes set in the women’s 1500, 3000 and 10,000 meters.
Many people believe these records had less to do with caterpillars and turtles and a lot more to do with traditional PEDs. As this in-depth article noted, “There are only a finite number of synonyms for ‘unbelievable.’ The Chinese explanation earned them all.”
