Wednesday night, after much coaxing by my running buddy gals, I went to my first Sweaty Betty running club. It's not that I hadn't wanted to go before, but I was doing my Pilates course until recently and then was away in Italy and had my monthly bookclub, so I just hadn't been able to.
So, on my first free Wednesday, I met up with Anna and we ran to the shop as our warm up. It was absolutely boiling outside with an impending thunderstorm, so the air was thick and heavy. Not fun for a run. We left the shop and ran back to Midsummer Commons (where we'd come from) and started with an 800m loop, speeding up during the second half. I was still ok-ish doing that, not super fast but also not one of the slowest girls. We then started doing 200m-sprints, that is, you sprint 200m, recover for 40 secs., sprint another 200m, etc. Six times! By the end I couldn't actually finish with a sprint and fell back into a jog. I was SHATTERED!!! Also, as is murphy's law, the heavens started coming down on us just on cue as we finished the last sprint! Allan, the coach, then suggested we do another 800m before heading back to the shop for a stretch. But I couldn't face it as I still had to run back home (in the rain!). So I joined the first half of the 800m then said my good byes and headed home – at a very slow jog.
It was hard work but I know it's the kind of work I need to put in if I want to get any faster. So stick with it I will.
Starting off with a slightly earlier and longer run Thursday morning had me knackered in no time again. Anna was getting worried about getting in enough long runs as she's away now for ten days and her half is two weeks before mine, so she convinced us all to go out earlier and longer. I couldn't join them for the whole trip as I start work before everyone else and had to get myself home and look representable. Yesterday I was going to take off but then Kim was in dire need of a vent, so we went out for a quick 3-miler before work so she could vent her frustrations. What else are friends for, right? And today, well, today was meant to be my long run, but I woke up with a sore throat and a slight headache. Maybe I've gotten rained on one too many times this week? I don't know.
Thinking I'd give myself a bit of a rest today, we went out on the bikes instead and put in a respectable 31.4k in 1:20hrs, well, I don't know if it's respectable or not, but it felt great being out, although still tiring. Way to cross-train. As the football's back on TV tomorrow, I'll try to squeeze my long run in the afternoon, when G's at the pub watching the game. I know, I know, I should allow myself some rest, but as we're away next weekend, I'm painfully aware of the fact that I need to get these runs done. So, one long one tomorrow, provided I feel well enough, then a few short ones next week and one hell-session at running club, followed by a weekend off. Not even the most concerned amongst you can argue with that, or can you?
Stay put to see what happens tomorrow, in the meantime (and in case I don't make it out tomorrow)...
