Runner’s Tech: SweatVac Performance Gear Review

Posted Jan 23 2013 10:37am

SweatVac is a Chicago-based performance gear company that has been manufacturing and selling a variety of headwear and tees for athletes. A while ago I received a couple of long sleeve tees from SweatVac to try and review.  As a runner who has tried a number of different brands of running apparel, I think SweatVac offers quality products. However, there’s just a couple of concerns I’d like to bring up – but let me start with some technical features:

  • Made with DriSmart technical Fabric
  • Silky-soft interior
  • Flat-seam construction for comfort
  • Micro-textured exterior for enhanced moisture wicking
Of the 2 Long Sleeve Race Tees I’ve received from SweatVac, I gave one to my friend,  Stephanie , a fellow runner from NYC, to try. Personally I loved the thin, soft, and light material SweatVac uses to make these tees. The material is literally silky-soft and smooth. The moisture managing ability is also excellent. And I especially appreciate how light these shirts are – perfect for layering when it gets cold and windy. In addition, it’s easy to take care of these shirts as they are machine washable and wrinkle free. I usually just quickly hand-wash mine right after a workout or toss it in the machine. The colors stay intact after washes as well as the size.
On the other hand, like most things, these shirts are not perfect. As I discussed with Stephanie after we’ve both tried SweatVac for a while, the consensus is that these shirts are relatively larger than its size. Although my small Long Sleeve Race Tee is reasonable in length, the neckline felt large compared to my other tees. In addition, the available colorways are a tad boring to our taste – folks who love seeing things in black and white may disagree with me on this. But I really wish SweatVac had something with bright, contrasting colors that make me “look” fast. Other than size and color, I really don’t have a bone to pick with SweatVac’s excellent performance apparel. These shirts are perfect as a layering option.

According to its website, SweatVac is founded by an avid cyclist to deliver high-quality gear for pro and amateur athletes. As a sponsor to several major events (USA Triathlon, Ragnar Relay to name a few), SweatVac also offers customization for clubs, teams, organizations, and events with branding options. And you can also find a wide selection of headwear from SweatVac – like hats, beanies, and bandanas. Feel free to check it out!

What’s your favorite running shirt? What qualities do you look for when you shop for running apparel? What running gear would you recommend to a friend?
