My son had a jazz and competition today and I needed to drop him off at school so I took this morning's outing as an opportunity to change my running route to a new venue...well sort of. After I dropped off AP I headed to WV for my run. I went old school! I headed out down Empire from WV as I had done countless other times. I had a really good run today after taking Thursday and Friday off. I went six and it felt like nothing. My route took me down Maringo then Upriver past Boulder Beach and back. When I got done I look at the GPS and found that I have been short changing WV runners for years. The route I thought was six was only 5.85. Sorry Eagles! :-)
When first pulled up to WV I saw a bunch of cars in the lot. I forgot there was a track meet today, The first annual West Valley Invite. WV was hosting teams from University, Lakeside, Newport, Sandpoint, and Chewela. I stuck around after my run to say hi and watch a little track and field. Now that I am not coaching I can just drive around looking for track meets to watch. Coach Blankenship roped me into timing the hurdles. I then made the rounds chatting up other coaches. Coach Barbero from Universit was very please with senior Anthony Brown's winter off-season saying "Anthony has worked very hard this winter."
I did stick around to watch the 1600...
At the gun a troop of 7 Titans quickly jumped to the front of the pack. Titan senior Anthony Brown lead the others by 10 meters at the 200 meter mark. At the end of the first lap Brown still held a 10 meter lead over the pack (in 1:03)which now included a surging Justin Degenhart from WV. Brown continued to push the pace in the second lap while Degenhart led a pack of U-hi's Aunan and Whitkoe, and WV's Michael White. At the end of the second lap Brown held a four second advantage over Degenhart (2:12 to 2:16.) During the third lap Brown kept his advantage, Degenhart pulled away from the pack, which saw U-hi sophomore Jon Smith making a move up to and through the pack. At the end of three it was Brown 3:22 and Degenhart 3:27. Brown maintained his five second lead over Degenhart at the fisnish with a winning time of 4:30 to Degenhart's 4:35. Smith led the pack followed by Aunan, White, Whitkoe, and two Lakeside runners...Austin Stuchell and Colton Berry. Brown's off-season paid off in a good early season time.
WV's Krystal Hughes won the girls 1600 going away in 5:35.
