Happy weekend long runs everyone! One of my local running stores has started up their Indianapolis Mini Marathon’s (half marathon) training this weekend with the group long run. More and more runners are starting to call out their chosen Spring marathons. And, we’re all starting to look at the new shoe releases, Newton Gravity and Brooks PureFlow 2 in particular! If you’ve been following, you know I do my long runs now on Fridays, so the weekends for me are much more low-key. Today I’m resting, hanging out, watching some TV, and enjoying some down time.
New running shoes came in the mail
I love my Newton Gravitys and have been building up my mileage in them, but I really wanted to test out the new Brooks PureFlow 2 line. RoadRunner Sports sent out a good coupon so I was able to get them at a good price. When I began my transition to a lower heel-to-toe drop, aka more “natural running”, I knew I needed to try both the Newton and Brooks Pure Project lines. Both lines will give you the cushion/protection from the road pounding, yet bring your foot down to a more “natural” level – lowering the heel so you aren’t running in a high heel. I wanted THAT.
The Schnoodle always gets excited when I put shoes on, the possibility of a walk!
I had been running fine all year, but ended the year with a sore foot that my sports chiro hinted at possibly being a stress fracture. I knew immediately I needed out of the high-heeled shoes! I’ve been running in the Newton Gravitys since November and have had NO return of the foot problem (knock on wood). The heel-to-toe drop is 3mm. I had chosen them over the Brooks PureFlows because the toe box felt better to me. Well, the new Brooks PureFlow 2s came out and the toe box seems a little wider? I need a shoe rotation since I’m running back-to-back runs now so I thought this was a good excuse to try out both, that way I will know by the Carmel Marathon which model will suit me best. The Brooks PureFlow 2s have a 4mm heel-to-toe drop so they are comparable to the Newtons in that regard. I can tell the Brooks Pureflow 2s are narrower, more form fitting on my foot, whereas the Newton Gravitys are wider, designed to give the foot room to “splay”.
I am hoping one of the shoes will stand out as the best one for me, but I have a suspicion both might do well. How would you then choose if you run well in both? I did a little analysis a while back, but now I’ll have both to try out to know for sure.
How cold is it here?
Yesterday’s run was done in around 27 degrees. I find it fairly easy to run in these temperatures, as long as there is no massive wind chill or ice/snow. Try it if you haven’t, you might be surprised how much easier it is to run in the cold compared to warmer temperatures. Here is what I wore in 27 degrees that kept a steady and comfortable body temperature for me. Just some simple tops from the Champion C9 line at Target, my CW-X Stabilyx insulated tights, and I was fine. I actually like the slightly looser fleece top in these cold temperatures. It gives you the warmth of fleece but some airflow to keep from overheating too much.
A fix to the after-run headache?
Do you sometimes get a raging headache after long runs? I often do and I’ve never figured out what causes it. I’ve Googled the topic to death and basically keep coming to the idea of a hydration issue? However, I know I’m hydrated well. Believe me, I am. I always have my Amphipod hand-held water bottles along on every run, regardless of the distance. I always have a post-run milk/almond milk drink, plus more water, sometimes added electrolytes. No, I’m pretty sure my issue is not hydration.
Well, after my long run yesterday, I happened to snack on some dark chocolate almond Dove bites plus a banana. No headache! Could it be the extra caffeine after a long run? Maybe the extra potassium? I’m not sure, but something with those two items may have narrowed down this mystery. I’ll be adding a little dark chocolate and bananas now within an hour or two after my long runs now. Hopefully this is the solution!
