MIMM: Home for the Holidays

Posted Dec 23 2013 4:54am

I can hardly believe Christmas is just a few days away. I’ve been having a  marvelous time at home thus far, so let’s take a look at how my family preps for the holidays.

marvelous is… cookie baking extravaganza! My mom and I made 7 dozen sugar cookies. Yep, that’s 84 cookies if you’re curious. We take our baking seriously. That doesn’t include the caramel cookies we made, bringing the grand total to 10 dozen cookies.

marvelous is… helping. I didn’t do the actual baking, I swear. If I did someone would definitely die of food poisoning. I was just there to “clean” the dishes after my mom did the real work.

not so marvelous is… skiing! My aunt and I were supposed to go to Sunday River again. Then it rained, so now we’re going next weekend. My parents and I went snowshoeing instead. I guess that kind of makes up for it. But I have to admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan.

I got those snowshoes 4 years ago… never been worn.

marvelous is… Boston! To make up for our cancelled ski plans, my family headed down to Boston to have dinner with my aunt at Papa Razzi. Their focaccia bread is out of this world. I love seeing the city all lit up at night.

It was also my first trip to Yogurtland! It made it's way over to the east coast :)

not so marvelous is…hot chocolate fail. I went to 9 gas stations in 3 days in search of a hot chocolate to replace the one in Baltimore. NINE. How many of them met my standards? One…. sort of. This is going to be a problem. The swiss miss k cups are my backup but I don’t love them.

yes, I did buy 2 at once to see which was better.

marvelous is… the gym. i love having a gym membership. The class selection at Thrive is amazing. I have to make choices between spinning and zumba and barre because they’re all at the same time. I want to go to all of them!

marvelous is… picking out a tree. I’m a pro. I point at one and my dad carries it to the car. It usually takes me less than 5 minutes. We have cathedral ceilings in our living room so the tree has to be spot on. This year we thought my brother should prove that his personal training sessions at the gym are working… he couldn’t even lift it. In fairness, the tree is so big that it broke the stand when we brought it in the house.

marvelous is… decorating the tree. It was a miracle that this got done before Christmas eve this year. I love seeing it all decorated and lit up. I have no idea why the ornaments look blue…

marvelous is… laughter. First we had a bird flying around the house when they brought the tree inside. Then my dog started legitimately jumping 4 feet in the air to try and steal the marshmallow peeps my dad was eating for dessert. I started crying I was laughing so hard.

who knew dogs like marshmallows so much?

marvelous is… swedish fish candy canes. Yes, my mom and I did go to target specifically for these after I saw them on Janae’s blog. I was so worried that my brother would eat them all so we bought him his own. I almost cried when we couldn’t find them (slight exaggeration) but my mom found the last box of the swedish fish ones hidden in the back. They taste exactly like the candy. It’s hard not to chomp down on them… I keep expecting them to be chewy.

marvelous is… sunshine. I am going to Florida for a week in the middle of January. Cannot. Wait. The Naples half marathon that week I’m debating  running but I’ll probably just relax and enjoy the downtime.

So yep, it was a busy weekend for sure. It didn’t feel like it because I enjoyed every second, but I’m looking forward to having today to myself to just get some last minute shopping done and sit on the couch. I’ve been so busy since I got home that I haven’t had time to finish unpacking or catch up on any of my shows!  I found a new one: Donut Showdown. Epic. Also, my parents failed to mention that we’ve had DVR for a year now. How is it that I grow up without cable for 18 years and the second I move out we get cable TV AND DVR. Something doesn’t seem right…

What did you do this weekend?

What’s your favorite part about the holidays?
