I ran my first marathon about a 5 weeks ago. While training for the marathon I ran into some IT Band issues but worked with a physical therapist to get around those and was able to run the marathon pain-free! After the marathon my knee was pretty swollen and a little sore, but I figured it would go away with a little rest and ice. I've continued going to the physical therapist but I've made no progress on healing my knee. It's been 5 weeks and the swelling is still there. I haven't run or done much physical activity at all since the marathon. Walking and stairs even seem to irritate my knee. I am very antsy to get back in the gym and am wondering if it's normal for it to take this long for a knee to heal of if it could possibly be something more serious? My physical therapist says I just need to give it more time but I'm getting very impatient.
I'm definitely no expert, but if I were you I would make an appointment to see my doctor. It seems unusual that your knee would still be swollen five weeks after the marathon and it's possible that something more serious than IT band issues is involved.
