I’ve always liked soda. Coke was my preferred product when I couldn’t get my actual favorite, Dr. Pepper. And I prided myself on the fact that I didn’t drink diet sodas. It seemed like a total waste to me and the flavor was awful!!
But as I got older, I started to become concerned about my weight and the number of calories I was ingesting. So, I switched to diet soda. Admittedly, it took a long time to get used to the flavor but eventually, I came to like it. And now I would say I like it even more than regular soda. Regular sodas are just too sweet.
I’ve always wondered whether diet sodas actually were beneficial though. While it logically makes sense, there are some studies saying that diet soda encourages overeating. This makes some sense to me but I didn’t think it applied to me as my calorie intake has not increased since giving up regular soda.
This story I heard on NPR about diet sodas was interesting. According to the latest research, switching to diet soda can reduce your weight. This study showed that teens who switched to diet soda had a significant weight reduction over the year. The results didn’t hold up after two years but you have to wonder how well people stuck with the study’s diet.
These are only a couple of studies and I”m not sure how they stack up to other studies on the subject, but it is interesting. It also helps reinforce my belief that if you are going to drink sodas, stick to the diet versions.
