I'm starting to really get active and have never been a big runner. Is training for a 5k a good first goal?

Oh totally! You have to start somewhere and a 5k is perfect. Not too far, not too long - plus you're way more likely to convince a friend or family member to train with you for 5k than a marathon! :)

Good luck with the race! I'm sure you'll do spectacular.

training for a 5k is the best for a beginner.  I started with the couch to 5k plan to get me started from www.coolrunning.com

I'll warn you...crossing the finish line becomes addictive!!  Good luck!!

The best first goal is to walk for half an hour and feel fine at the end. The best next goal is to jog or run for half an hour and feel fine at the end. The best next goal is to jog or run for 3 miles (5K) as long as you do it at a comfortable pace in which you could converse with a running buddy. For your first 5K, forget time -- just focus on finishing the distance.
Setting a race goal like a 5K race is a very positive approach in achieving your desired fitness level. The distance is short plus it gives you an opportunity to assess your performance after the race. More importantly, it opens more challenges to tackle by you completing the race.
